Putting Research into Action: Ethics and Adoption Training for Social Workers and Mental Health Professionals

As recent headlines make clear, adoption – whether international, domestic infant or from foster care – poses ethical challenges for all parties. Social workers and mental health professionals are primary stakeholders in the process, often serving as the primary gatekeepers of ethical practice.

The Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute has long been a leader in promoting ethical policy and practice in adoption, including through its sponsorship of two major, comprehensive national conferences on the subject. Based on the input of our country's leading practitioners, policy-makers, researchers and activists, the Institute now offers continuing education credits for social workers, mental health professionals and counselors to guide their practice in training. We are calling this innovative initiative Adoption Ethics and Accountability.

About our CEU Courses

This 7.5-hour training examines ethical considerations for all parties to adoption: families of origin, adopted adults and children, and adoptive parents. In addition, it addresses all types of adoption - placement of children across national boundaries, adoption of children from the foster care system, and domestic adoption of infants.

Continuing education credits are granted through Illinois State University's School of Social Work, which is a registered Continuing Education Sponsor through the State of Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation Division of Professional Regulation. License No. 159.000191.

Please note: Participants may contact their respective state licensing boards to request approval of CEU credit provided through the State of Illinois.

CEU Formats and Description

All Continuing Education Courses are available on DVDs, which will be mailed via Priority Mail after payment is verified; we are also working to provide online downloads in the future. Depending on a given state's requirements for certification of a course, the participant will complete an evaluation, test or certification for submission to the Adoption Institute. Once the requirements are met and received by the Institute, we will submit the information to the ISU's School of Social Work, which will process the CEU certificate. Please allow 3-4 weeks to process. All CEUS will be sent via email. If you have questions, contact ceu@adoptioninstitute.org or call Mari Cochran, CEU Coordinator, at 828.989.4511.
